Edwin Carels - Homeless Movies (2016, 22’): presentation + shortfilms
20:30

"An object is dead when the living gaze on it has disappeared." (Chris Marker)

Edwin Carels conducts research into media archeology as a methodology. He asks artists to project their 'living gaze' on an archive or a specific item. For the 'Homeless Movies' project he and ‘Het Huis van Alijn’ asked six young artists to distil a new short film out of a collection of home movies. The methodology examines evolutions in visual culture, identity, media use, memory, and the dynamics between public and private contexts.

With films by Mekhitar Garabedian, Eva Giolo, Katrin Kamrau, Jasper Rigole, Meggy Rustamova and Lisa Spilliaert.

Edwin Carels on Vava’s video (year unknown, 13’) by Vava

“Through an mp4 format the fate of 'Vava', a man from Eeklo who died in 2013, surfaced. Originally, it was recorded on a VHS tape. The story of ‘Vava’ remains a private history, even after his death, but this one videotape from his inheritance deserves a public life, not only as an intuitive reverie about the vulnerability of electronic home movies but also as an artefact full of references to the history of the audiovisual media. And even: as a spontaneous piece of media art by an outsider artist.”
